Hot Chocolate Fudge Cake Recipe

For the Cake:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the Fudge Topping:
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/4 cups hot water

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch square baking pan.
  2. Prepare the Cake Batter:
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
    • In another bowl, combine the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
    • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. The batter will be thick.
    • Spread the batter evenly in the prepared baking pan.
  3. Prepare the Fudge Topping:
    • In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and cocoa powder.
    • Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter in the baking pan.
  4. Add the Hot Water:
    • Pour the hot water evenly over the top. Do not stir. The water will create a sauce as the cake bakes.
  5. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is firm. The cake will rise to the top, and a rich fudge sauce will form underneath.
  6. Cool Slightly:
    • Let the cake cool for about 15 minutes. This allows the sauce to thicken slightly.
  7. Serve:
    • Spoon the cake into serving bowls, making sure to get plenty of the fudge sauce from the bottom of the pan. Serve warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
