People Are Layering Cake, Cherry Pie Filling and Pudding in One Dish. The No-Bake Dessert Is Going Viral Again

The recipe looks more complicated than it is.

Chunks of soft angel food cake are layered with bright red cherry pie filling, creamy vanilla pudding and whipped topping.

There is no baking.

There is no frosting to pipe.

And there is almost no technique involved.

The dessert is known as Heaven on Earth Cake, an old-fashioned American refrigerator dessert that has returned to recipe sites and social media in 2026. Allrecipes describes it as a no-bake layered dessert built from angel food cake, cherry filling and vanilla pudding, with home cooks praising it as an easy summer option.

Why it works

Angel food cake is extremely light and porous.

Once cut into cubes, it absorbs some of the moisture from the pudding and cherry filling without becoming completely dense.

The pudding adds a soft custard-like layer, while the cherries provide acidity and color.

After several hours in the refrigerator, the separate ingredients begin to merge into something closer to a chilled trifle.

That resting time is important.

The dessert tastes better after the cake has had time to absorb some of the filling.

Ingredients

  • 1 prepared angel food cake
  • 1 can cherry pie filling, about 600 g
  • 1 package instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 500 ml cold milk
  • 225 g sour cream
  • 225 to 300 g whipped topping
  • sliced almonds, optional

You can also replace the cherry filling with strawberries, blueberries or raspberries. Allrecipes specifically notes that home cooks adapt the dessert with different fruits.

How to make Heaven on Earth Cake

1. Cut the cake

Cut the angel food cake into rough cubes.

The pieces do not need to be perfectly even.

Place about half of them across the bottom of a large glass baking dish.

2. Add the cherries

Spoon part of the cherry pie filling over the cake.

Do not spread it too aggressively. Leaving some visible pockets of cherries creates a better layered appearance.

3. Make the pudding layer

Whisk the instant vanilla pudding with cold milk until it begins to thicken.

Fold in the sour cream.

The sour cream gives the filling a slight tang and prevents the dessert from becoming excessively sweet.

4. Build the second layer

Add the remaining angel food cake.

Spoon the rest of the cherry filling over the top.

Spread the pudding mixture across the entire dish.

5. Add whipped topping

Finish with an even layer of whipped topping.

For texture, scatter sliced almonds over the surface.

You can also add a few spoonfuls of cherry filling on top so people immediately know what flavor is inside.

6. Refrigerate

Cover the dish and refrigerate it for at least four hours.

Overnight is even better.

The cake softens slightly while the pudding becomes firmer and the layers settle together.

Serve cold.

The strawberry version

Replace the cherry filling with strawberry pie filling or sliced fresh strawberries mixed with a little sugar.

Add fresh berries to the top immediately before serving.

This version looks especially good in a clear glass dish because the white cream and red fruit create strong visible layers.

Why it is going viral again

The recipe fits perfectly into the current interest in older American desserts.

It uses supermarket ingredients, requires no oven and can be assembled in less than 20 minutes.

It also photographs extremely well.

A spoon lifted from the dish reveals several layers at once: cake, fruit, vanilla cream and whipped topping.

That makes it ideal for short Facebook, Instagram and TikTok videos.

Its appeal is almost the opposite of complicated pastry.

Nothing has to be perfect.

The cake is torn or cubed, the ingredients are layered and the refrigerator does most of the remaining work.
